Another earthquake...

Sep 25, 2017

Hey everyone! all guys had a great week! My week was a bit SHAKY if you know what I mean (haha, dumb joke?) Anyways, yeah the first thing I wanted to talk about today was the earthquake we had on tuesday afternnon. I'm not sure if you guys heard, but we had another one! it was a 7.1 earthquake, but way more deadly than the one that hit us two weeks ago! But I'll tell you guys the story.(P.S. Its a bit long, but i promise its worth it!!)
So we came home after the district meeting because Elder Pizzi had an over the phone interview that was going to last about an hour, so I just took the time to study. He finsihed his phone call at about 1:00, and so we were just sitting on our beds talking. We didnt have to leave for an appointment for a bit. So as we were talking, we heard like some stuff moving, and then we both just stopped talking and looked at eachother like what the heck? and then literally like 2 seconds after that our whole building started shaking and moving. It was definately an adrenaline rush moment, because we looked at eachother and our eyes got like super big and I just yelled earthquake! and we jumped from our beds, i was looking for my shoes, not sure why, but i just threw my sandlas on, grabbed the phone and bolted for the door. I forgot to mention we live on the fourth floor! and its super high up! Our house has a ton of windowns too, so all I remember is a bunch of glass shaking and stuff falling on the floor. We have to run down six sets of stairs, and about halfway through, i was like oh crap Elder Pizzi did you grab the keys (because we cant leave the apartment building without unlocking the main door) so hes like screaming NOOOO and so i was like dang! I ran back up the stairs, thankfully we lef the door open, and i searched for the keys! I ended up finsing them under some papers, but I remember a distinct moment where I thought I was going to die. It was like a split second, where my body froze and i was about to run out of the door, and I just thought the building was going to collapse on us and we wernt going to be able get out in time, and seriously, 1000 thoughts went through my head in like 0.234232 seconds! So i ran down the stairs and we opened the door, the ground was still shaking. It finally stopped, right at the monent we walked outside in the street. And to put everything into one word, it was CHAOS! We live right by a huge middle school and all these parents were just running so fast to get their kids, and so many people were crying, and people were zooming down the streets to get their kids in their cars and motorcycles and bikes, and it was loud, eveyone was yelling, on the phone. I cannot even describe how crazy it was. So we were just outside watching and observing everyone. Elder Pizzi didnt even have shoes on haha! so after everything somewhat calmed down, we were able to go up to our apartment. Everything had fallen off the shelves, our tables were a mess. I mean, thats nothing compared to what happned to other people in other area. The videos that you guys probably saw on the news was nothing like my area. No buildings fell and nobody died. But the earthquake was still super scary.
The rest of the day we went and visited a ton of families and people to see if they were ok. We didnt have electricity in our house the rest of the day, or cell phone signal. So, the zone leaders couldnt get ahold of anyone.

We had Zone conference on thursday. President Mecham told us his story. He was at his house standing in the driveway, and then the earth started shaking, and he said he was like woah! and s}trying to stay up and his car was bouncing up and down. But the part i really liked, is that he said not a single thought went through his head that his misionaries were going to get hurt or die. He said he didnt even think about that once. He said that he was shaking around, couldnt even stand, but he had a smile on his face and he was happy because he was just thinking were gonna baptize the world!! haha i love president Mecham! And it's true. Not a single mssionary got hurt. We are all safe. However, at the same time we were having our zone conference (the church is super big. It has two sacrament meeting rooms) there was a funeral for two boys. Brothers. One was 12 and one was 6. Their mom told them to stay home from school that day. She went to work. And the earthquake happened. The house collapse and killed the brothers. So we had to be very reverent for the families on the other side of our chapel. So many people died, but I mean, so many kids died. Remember, this was in the middle of the day. Kids died. Schools collapsed and they are finding bodies every single day. Im so sad for them! But like president Mecham was telling us. This is time for people to re evaluate how they are living their lives (read 2 nephi 28:6-7)

So anyways, that was something super big for the people in CDMX. Exactly 32 years ago on september 19th, 1985 there was an earthquake in the city that destroyed and killed many people. So kinda weird. People were asking us if the world was going to end and stuff. But just remember to keep living your lives as if you are going to die in an earthquake tomorrow. (not exactly like that, but you know what i mean) I remember my brother Michael asked me what the gospel principal in this earthquake was and I said I dont know. I asked him what he thought and all he responded was Helaman 5:12. Go read it! Maybe the devil didnt literally move the tectonic plates. But he is using this as a great opportunity to creep into the hearts of the people with hate, fear, sadness and doubt. We always need to have a strong foundation in Christ, because the devil WILL send forth his mighty winds and his shafts and all that stuff, the only thing that will protect us is our faith in Christ. It doesn't matter if we have money and live in the biggest house and have the nicest cars. In the end that doesnt matter. It is our faith that will save us from the temptation of Satan, and I truly testify to that suff, because i amin Mexico and nobody is rich here. Everyone is poor. And us as missionaries, can truly see the humility in these great people.

Have a great week everyone! Sorry this was long, but hope you all got something out of it!

Love you all!

You know it, Krispy Kreme.. tastes exactly the same
Why do I always make that face?
This is why we wake up early!!!

Week 5 - Figuring Things Out

Whats up everyone!? Hope everybody had a great week! Well, today, I finally hit two weeks in the field, and one month in the mission! I am honestly having a great time here. The city is absolutely disgusting and smells bad, but somehow I find it beautiful! The people here are great! I love meeting new people and teaching investigators! the only thing is that in practically every appointment we have, i always get asked what my thoughts on Donald Trump are... let me tell you, they HATE Trump here. So i obviously tell them I don't care about him. In reality, I don't have a preference. Not into politics. Anyways, I had a pretty good week though. Went on exchanges with the Zone Leaders and we went to work! Visited a ton of investigators. The people here are very very willing to listen to our message. I love it! It's hot here everyday, and there are random thunderstorms every now and then. The food is good but I´ll be honest, lately the food has been getting the worst of me latel...

Remember your covenants!

April 23, 2018 it was a pretty good week here in espartaco! Found some new investigators, put baptismal dates for them! so hope everything work out. They are three kids! so hopefully we can get them excited for baptism! Our investigator Jesus got baptized this week! It was pretty cool. Jesus has been an investigator for like 3 years, but for some reason he stopped listening to the missionaries for like 2 years. His wife recently got baptized, exactly a month ago actually, and so this past month we've really taken advantage of the opportunity and got him excited to be baptized. And Jesus is one of those investigators that you don't really find. His goal wasn't to be baptized. His goal is to get the priesthood and be sealed one day on the temple and baptism is just a step he needs to take to get there. He goes to church every Sunday and actively participates in class! He really wanted to change his life, and now he is baptized! He is such a great guy, and I know that if h...

Happy New Year 2018!!

Jan 8, 2018 sorry I havent written for so long! so much has happened, but then again I feel like not much has happened. My Christmas was pretty awesome here! I'm not gonna lie, it felt nothing like Christmas back at home in Oregon. The reason being... well they just celebrate it differently. There are people who go all out and decorate their homes with lights and Christmas trees, and then there are people that don't really care and just use it as an excuse to party and drink haha. But its cool. Christmas day here is really celebrated on the 24th, so the 25th kinda seems like a normal day. But nonetheless, I got to talk to my family and that's always nice. Then of course new years was this past week, which was pretty awesome too. It was weird because not that many people were out on the streets, kinda just another normal day. Cool story though: On Monday night, Elder Lomeli and I were talking right before we went to bed about the prophets. He was just asking me a bun...
